There was this time I was working in a firm. A small firm. I was the Accountant and in the Internal Control Person.
My first month in, the Director travelled out of the country. He was away for around 3 weeks and one of his wives, the youngest of them, put a call across to the office and requested we transfer to her an amount. If am not mistaken, I think its about N400,000
When I saw the memo, what the money she had requested was meant for? The answer I got was "the money is for Oga's wife".
I told the lady who brought the memo that I won't sign and the memo won't fly. She looked at me for seconds and went away.
Soon, I got a call and it was Oga's wife. She said she told me to sign a memo and I refused. She ordered me to sign the memo before she ends the call. I asked her, "What is the money meant for?" she got angry and started saying unpleasant words to me. she created some drama and carried out threats.
Oga came back and she reported me to him. Then he called a meeting. He asked why I refused to grant his wife her request? I humbly told him that the money his wife requested for has no explanation for what it was going to be used for and I can't sign a memo not related to the company's expenses.
I told him boldly, "Sir, even if the memo is coming from you without a good reason, I won't sign such memo. He laughed and said, "I have been in search of someone like you for a very long time. How much is your salary he asked? I will increase it and he did.
Three months later, Oga's wife was sent away. The Director discovered that the child he claimed to be his wasn't his biological child. That made my Oga to love me more.
Til today, My Boss still appreciate my firm decision not to sign that memo that would have given my Oga's youngest wife the N400,000 she had requested for.
Learn to stand firm on your decision especially when you know that you are doing the right thing. The benefits far outweighs the consequences
